Varsity Volleyball beats North Salinas 3-1
On September 22, Monte Vista’s varsity volleyball team continued their hot streak with their 3rd straight league win of the season. After beating Stevenson in a 5 set thriller two days prior, the mustangs (9-4 overall) pushed through fatigue to beat North Salinas (5-7 overall). In the first set, both sides made many errors, but the mustangs easily won 25-22. However, the Vikings came out with fire in the 2nd set and won 25-15. Woken up, the mustangs continued their same consistency from the 1st set by running a faster tempo offense and won the 3rd set 25-20. Having gathered momentum, the mustangs finished the job by crushing North Salinas 25-16 in the fourth set. In total, Sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth McCuistion had 13 kills and 17 digs. Meanwhile, Co-Captain and outside hitter Isa Madrigal had 10 kills and 9 digs while other Co-Captain and setter Avery Coleman had 26 assists and 13 digs. In an interview after the match, Avery Coleman stated,
“Overall, the game wasn’t our best play but we pulled it together in the end and finished strong. One thing that was very consistent and strong was our blocking. I know for future games we will only go up from here and use this game as a good example of how to get back up on our feet and finish the game strong!”
The mustangs will hope to continue their winning streak at the Watsonville high tournament on Saturday September 24 where they will have a chance to avenge their first loss against Scott’s Valley (1-9). Additionally, sophomore transfer and setter Hailey Gomez, who has been prohibited from playing due to CCS rules, will be permitted to play in her first official match on Saturday. The mustangs’s next home game will be against Pacific Grove (7-3 overall) on Monday September 26. To get more updates on the team’s journey to the top, follow the mustang Volleyball’s Instagram page.
